Build Milo
Learning intention
We are learning to build and code a robot that can help us explore places people can't go.
We are learning to design, build and program a wheeled robot that can carry out a task in a place that is hard for humans to reach.
Success criteria
- I can follow the steps to build Milo the rover.
- I can connect the Smart Hub to the iPad.
- I can make a block program that moves Milo, and change one thing in it.
- I can explain why scientists use rovers to explore remote places.
- I can follow technical instructions to assemble a working robot with a motor and Smart Hub.
- I can write and modify a sequence of commands to control a motor's power and duration.
Our mission
Max and Mia want to find a very special plant. The plant lives in a place that is hard for people to reach. Our job is to build and code Milo the robot rover so he can go and look for it for them.

Step 1 · Explore
Talk about it: What do scientists do when they can't go to the place they want to explore?
Lesson: WeDo 2.0 Getting Started — Project A (Grades 1–5, 30–45 min).
Explore (10 min). Rovers on Mars, submarines, drones. Failure is a chance to learn.
Create (20 min). Students build Milo (29 steps). Watch for correct motor & Smart Hub cable connections.
Share (10 min): Each team photo + "How could Milo help find a plant?"
Step 2 · Make Milo
Follow the steps below to build Milo. Then plug in the motor and link the Smart Hub to the iPad. Open Code Milo to make him move — or make up your own program on the Code canvas.
Step 3 · Share
Take a photo of your team with Milo. Think about: How could Milo help find a special plant? What did you change in the program?
